Monitoring Sleeping or Resting Children
Statement of Principle
Procedure
Children attending this Centre will be able to go to bed at any time during the day that they require. Individual routines will be discussed with parents at enrolment and regularly throughout their stay with us.
All sleeping/resting children will be regularly checked at ten minute intervals, and staff will sign a sleeproom check form each time, and will also record the duration and time of each child’s sleep. To ‘check’, is to visually assess that each child is breathing, safe and well.
A Baby Monitor will be turned on throughout the day in both the Infants sleep area and the Toddlers sleep area, whether there are children in the sleeproom, attended by a staff member or not.
No child may eat or drink while lying down in their bed. If a child needs a bottle before bed they must be sitting up to drink.
Casual relieving staff will not be left alone with children in any Sleeproom.
Infants Area
If there are any children in the sleeproom a staff member will ensure that the children settle down to sleep before leaving the room (as per their individual home routine), and/or will ensure that resting children are happy. A staff member will remain with sleeping children or within hearing distance of the baby monitor.
Toddlers/Kindy Area
If a child needs to sleep, prior to the ‘Sleep Time’ (which will be after lunch), they will either, be offered a bed in the Toddler or Infant Sleeproom. A staff member will ensure that the child is settled before leaving them, and that the baby monitor in the Toddler Sleeproom is switched on.
For ‘Sleep Time’, a staff member will settle children off to sleep and ensure resting children are happy. This will occur in the relevant Sleeproom, either Toddler or Kindy. When all children are settled down to sleep the staff member may leave the room but will remain within hearing distance of the baby monitor.
Toddler and Kindy staff check the child every 10 minutes.
